The Ph.D. program in Operations Management (OM) focuses on the design and optimisation of processes and resources that create goods and services. It is targeted at talented individuals who wish to pursue academic and/or research careers in the field of operations management or a related area.
While a strong analytical background is provided to students through the coursework in the program, research in OM can take a variety of approaches including analytical, empirical, or simulation based approaches. Faculty members in this area have a strong background in operations management as well as in operations research/management science. They are actively involved in research and have a record of quality research publications. Some of their recent research work has appeared in leading international journals such as Management Science, Operations Research, Manufacturing and Service Operations Management, IIE Transactions, Operations Research Letters, Production and Operations Management, Naval Research Logistics, International Journal of Production Research, European Journal of Operational Research, Journal of the Operational Research Society, International Journal of Physical Distribution and Logistics Management etc.
Doctoral students in this program are expected to work closely with the faculty on research projects. Although supply chain management receive added emphasis currently, other areas of study include logistics management, inventory systems, plant location, e-operations, reliability analysis, group technology, forecasting.
Applicants to the program are expected to have a strong quantitative background. Fundamental knowledge in operations management and economics is desirable. The core courses in the Ph.D. program in OM include: managing business operations, supply chain and logistics management, optimization, stochastic processes, inventory theory, contemporary issues in operations management, and statistics. Besides the core courses, students may have to take up a number of elective courses also.
