Upon passing the written comprehensive exam and the oral confirmation exam, students are advanced to candidacy for the PhD and may begin work on the dissertation.
From here, PhD student delve into research study in their chosen field of specialisation, and make original contributions in their dissertation by identifying gaps in the current research. It is a rigorous process of continuous and conscientious surveying and synthesizing of present and past literature. In this process, supervisors will provide their insights, input and close guidance to the student. The effort and commitment from both students and supervisors ensure that the dissertations are of high quality and are completed in a timely fashion. Essentially, the dissertations must make significant contributions to the literature in the field of specialisation.
Students are free to choose their supervisor based on their research interest and supervisor’s expertise. The choice should be exercised with great care because the effectiveness of the student-supervisor relationship has a significant effect on the PhD experience.
